Death Toll Rises In Lagos Building Collapse

Collapsed-Mall
The death toll from the collapse of the unfinished five-storey shopping complex in Victoria Island has increased, with officials confirming five people killed in the tragic accident.
Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), worked together with rescue officials from the Nigeria Red Cross and members of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) to rescue victims from the site of the collapse.
Another 25 people were reported injured in the building collapse. The last trapped victim, identified as Mr. Dele Oyedele, the architect of the mall, was rescued wounded but alive at about 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
One construction worker who survived the collapse told reporters that it was “like watching a Hollywood movie.” Abdullahi, the worker, had left the construction site at about 3:55 p.m. on Monday to pray at a nearby mosque. He returned ten minutes later to join his co-workers and was at the entrance of the structure when it came crashing down.
General Manager of LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the rescue officials worked through the night to rescue the trapped workers.
Vanguard reports that part of the uncompleted shopping complex has been leveled.
