Nigeria Witnesses Partial Eclipse Of The Sun

Image of the Sun.
A partial eclipse of the Sun has been witnessed on Sunday in Nigeria confirming the forecast by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).
Between the hours of 1:00pm to 16:00pm, local time, residents in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, experienced a flush of sunlight and mild darkness.
Some Abuja residents gathered at the NASRDA office in Abuja to experience the eclipse, which the agency had described as an astronomical phenomenon.
Searching The Skies
With their eyes searching the skies, students from different schools in Abuja, who were at the NASRDA office, could not hide their excitement.
The Director General of the agency, Dr. Saidu Mohammed, told reporters that the eclipse would not affect satellite communication.
He advised Nigerians to remain calm, as there was nothing mystical about it.
The eclipse, which occurred at exactly 1:03pm, local time, could only be seen through binoculars or a telescope by projecting the sun’s disc onto a sheet of card or paper.
Some people also used eclipse glasses which filter sunlight.

I Swear I Will Marry Nadia Buari – Jim Iyke

Nadia Buari
If you are one of those who still habour doubts over Jim Iyke’s true intentions for Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari, then it is time to hold your peace, as the now born again Jim has come out to say that he intends to marry Nadia because his family members love and adore her.
Jim’s stand has now become necessary as many fans of Nadia, especially in her home country, do not believe that he will marry her in the end, as some see him as a serial heart breaker who has used and dumped many ladies. But the one-time bad boy of Nollywood movies has responded, saying that he has finally come to the point where he knows he must settle down, as he loves Nadia with all his heart.
Jim has this to say; “Yes we have discussed marriage. But we are taking it one step at a time. I am actually at a point where starting a family is becoming an attractive proposition. Nadia and I have been to Nigeria and my family members love and adore her.”
Do you still doubt Jim?

I Have Never Hidden The Identity Of My Daughter’s Father” – Singer, Omawumi Reveals

omawumi
by Wilfred Okiche

“You start jor, I no get time” Omawumi yells at me as she takes a break in between rehearsals with her No Time Band. She offers to hold my recorder and speaks English that could make the queen jealous. But she remains Omawumi, raised in Warri and reverts to her comedic pidgin English when she wants to stress a point.
She says she does not have time but we manage to talk about a lot. Her new album, her baby daddy and her hot-cold relationship with the press.
Enjoy excerpts from the conversation.

How often do you rehearse like this?
I rehearse every Thursday every week except when I am not in town. Sometimes twice a week. I get on the average 6 gigs every month so I have to be ready.

So music is serious business now?
Yes, it is.

When you were prepping your band, I heard you say something about listening to Asa’s band because they almost always have it all together. Is she an artiste that influences you?
Of course, but the thing is it is not just Asa. I am an avid listener of good music and Asa’s repertoire is always a pleasure to listen to. When you hear Femi Kuti’s band, Hugh Masakela’s band, Angelique Kidjo, Salif Keita, you understand immediately that these are people who concentrate on the music as well as the vocals so everything goes together.

Is this your band or a group you rehearse with?
This is my band, I don’t understand what type of kpakaraka question you asked. Omawumi and the No Time band. We have been together since 2009.

Lets talk about your current album ‘Lasso of Truth’, what has the reception been like critically and commercially. Honestly.
We thank God. Commercially it has been doing very well. Critically too. Of course you happen upon questions like what was she thinking for some songs but for my music, there are some primary things involved. The first is that I try to pass a message across. The message is generally of good will, vital issues and human relations. I try to make sure that when you listen, you don’t concentrate too much on the vocal ability or my physical attributes. I want the focus to be on the music, every other thing comes incidentally.

Do you have figures for the album’s commercial reception?
I do not but I can categorically tell you that the marketer did a first run of 500,000 copies and it is very near finished now. The first week we did more than a 100,000 copies in sales.

The YNaija review concluded that the album sounds a lot like your first album. Was this deliberate?
I don’t know how it sounds like my first album. I would agree with the review in the sense that with regards to the different genres that I touched in my first album, I did again in my second. The difference between my first and second albums is that the latter is more driven, has more direction and more maturity in it. My first album is good but the second is different and good.

Not better?
I don’t know.

Do you have any favourite songs on the album?
No, all my songs are my favourites.

On the album version of your hit single ‘Bottom belle’, we heard your daughter’s voice. How old is she now?
She turned 2 some months back.

Is she a singer like mama?
I don’t know, she is just a happy child. I mean she sings but I am not about to point at this and say at 2 years old she is a singer or a lawyer or anything.

What is the relationship like, does she know she is Omawumi’s baby?
Yes. I sing it, people sing it to her all the time so she knows she is Omawumi’s baby. If you are asking if she knows that her mother is an artiste, I don’t know if a 2 year old child will be able to comprehend all of that. Of course she sees me on TV and says “Ah! That’s mama”. She hears my voice and says that’s mama but I don’t know how much a 2 year old can comprehend.

Does she know that mama is a superstar?
First off, I don’t think I am a superstar. When you were 2 did you know Michael Jackson as a superstar or did you just like his music?

I probably just liked his music.
Then what kind of question are you asking me?

Do you deliberately take a long time before putting out a new album?
How did I take long? ‘Wonder woman’ was released 2009 November and we launched it February 2nd 2010. Now ‘Lasso of truth’ followed 3 years later. Now I know that there are many other artistes Wizkid, 2face who have done so too. The standard life span of an album in Nigeria is 2 years. We as artistes need to take our time to make good music for you. The most important thing is that the music remains fresh, consistent and enjoyable.

On ‘Lasso of truth’, all of the songs could stand on their own as bonafide hit singles…
Really?

I think you know this already. The question is do you sit down and consciously make radio friendly singles all the time?
Sometimes my songs come to me, sometimes I go to them. Either way, we do the songs. I am a happy go lucky person but I am also a God-fearing somebody. So all of that reflects in my music and that is how I just put it in.

Your album release concert was a sort of game changer in that in recent times, only the males have been throwing lavish album release concerts. What did you hope to get by doing so?
That is the fantastic part, I am always a pioneer. That is the satisfaction in the work that I do. if there is a secret I will let you know today, it is that success is in the mind. There is a person out there who used to go hungry all the time but is now drinking garri 3 times a day. To him that is success because he did not have food before. Now how I view success is not of being at the very top but of making use of the opportunities God has created for me to be a pioneer.

You seem to have a beautiful relationship with your mother and your song, ‘The best you can be’ is largely about that connection. Tell us about this relationship.
Me and my mum we are good. She is my best friend, my closest friend and I am blessed to have family around me who genuinely care.

The song is also about your own ties with your daughter. What kind of relationship do you imagine having with her?
At the end of the day I believe that while I am a parent, first of all I am somebody whom God has appointed to take care of the children he has brought into this world. So my responsibility as a parent is to do all that I can in accordance to God’s word to make sure that my child becomes a good child with moral values, someone who respects societal laws and becomes an upright being.

Let us talk about the question you will never live down. Do you think that one day you will be ready to reveal the father of your baby?
I don’t hide it, I have never hid it but I don’t feel it is something I owe to the general public to stand in the microphone and announce because e no concern anybody. I put my music out there and that is what concerns everybody. But I also understand that these are the things that come with being in the public glare. However, I musn’t conform because you think it is what I should do. This person is an individual. He respects his daughter, loves her and is a part of his daughter’s day to day life. The media people make it seem like it is the public that is interested in the gist but I don’t think it is true. From the start of my career, I have tried to make people understand that I am an artiste. I don’t go to my banker and ask them to tell me if their daughter is pregnant. As long as I am not shoving my personal life in your face, I believe everyone should respect my privacy. But if you must pry, at least have the simple decency to get the correct information when you do that.

Not holding brief for anyone but sometimes these journalists are forced to report half-truths
because you are not forthcoming with the information they seek.
That is no excuse. If the information isn’t there, you look for it, isn’t that what journalists do? The Bible says all liars shall partake of the lake of fire. I know I have told some lies but the kind of pregnant lies that these media people tell some times oh my God! If I were to get a self-contained apartment, they would get a duplex in hell. I tire.

I TREAT MY FEMALE FANS LIKE MY SISTERS- OLAMIDE

8
Artiste, Olamide Adedeji keeps pushing the boundaries in the Yoruba rap genre in the Nigerian music industry using a style of delivery made popular by late music superstar, Da Grin.
In this Sun Newspapers interview, the talented rapper who is also a final year student of the Tai Solarin University speaks on his growing up, music, relationship with popular producer, I.D Cabasa, and rumoured affiliation with the Illuminati, believed to be a secret society.
Read excerpts from the interview below:

Could you tell us about yourself?
My name is Olamide Adedeji. I’m a native of Abeokuta, Ogun State. I was born and bred in Bariga, Lagos. I’m a student of Tai Solarin University where I’m studying Mass Communication. I’m from a family of seven.

How did you start out as rapper?
I discovered music was in me while growing up. In 2003 I started writing my own lines and performing at shows and the rest today is history.

What was growing up like?
Growing up was not that rosy neither was it that bad. Growing up in the ghetto was quite challenging because you’re looked down on by kids from upscale neighbourhoods. In the ghetto I was given ghetto orientation which is never to look down on myself no matter what.

Tell us about your love life?
I have nothing to say about that.

Late Dagrin seemed to have influenced you a great deal. What does he mean to you?
He’s more like the late Martin Luther King. I call him Barrack ‘O Grin. He is such a blessing to Nigeria. He really paved the way big time for up-and coming rappers like myself back in the day. It’s not like there has not been other people before him but his impact was awesome! Dagrin is a great artiste and I respect him; he is a legend.

Lately you have become so big. How are you filling the vacuum Dagrin left behind?
I don’t know. It is depend on people’s perspective. I just live my life the way I feel and besides, I’m not the only rapper in the industry. There are others like Lord of Ajasa. However I’m only doing my thing. Now people are comparing me to Dagrin and that feels great. I see it as a blessing from God. I can’t say I’m the best rapper; that would be ridiculous. It’s like saying Jay Z is the best rapper. However, it’s not like Jay Z is better than B.I.G but people see the love they have for B.I.G in Jay Z. B.I.G died when he started making money and people were heartbroken. And Jay Z can never open his mouth and say ‘I’m better than B.I.G.’ The same thing applies to me too. I can’t say I’m better than Dagrin.

How do you get inspiration for your music?
I discovered a long time ago that rap music is all around me so I draw a lot of inspiration from my environment. I just feel comfortable being a rapper as opposed to singing. Seeing rap icons like Dagrin and the love he had for the art just overwhelms me.

How do you handle your female fans?
(laughter)We dey try. Behind every successful man there is a woman. For me it’s not just about a woman but women so I take advantage of it positively. I don’t sleep with my female fans; I treat them like my sisters.

What’s been your happiest moment?
God has done many things for me. I can’t tell which moment is the happiest but one I can remember was the release of my first album, Rhapsodi. I was so happy when it was released. That album registered my name in the annals of the history of rap music in Nigeria.

What was it like meeting I.D Cabasa?
I met I.D Cabasa when I went to record with a friend in a studio. We met each other and struck the right chords and the connection took off from there. That’s how I ended up having his support. And ever since, he’s been giving me that special big brotherly love.

What’s your advice for up-and-coming artistes?
My advice is that they should put God first and do less of unnecessary hard work.

If not rap what would you be doing?
For now, I don’t see myself leaving the rap world. I would rather be running a rap music label.
What is the meaning of Ilefo Illuminati
It is slang in my neighbourhood in Bariga, Lagos. Ilefo simply means swag.

There is talk that you belong to illuminati. How true is this?
I have been correcting that impression in all my interviews and I’m not going to get tired of it. I only feel I need to keep representing my own people and communicating with them in a way that they will understand me. So, I want to tell my people that I don’t belong to illuminati or any secret society.

What has been your challenges?
Wow! It used to be an issue of finance. Right now the major one we are facing is the issue of piracy. And it’s crazy men! I feel it should stop but I also know it can never be stopped!

What are your dreams?
I want to be a global brand that is why I’m looking up to God. It is not by my power but by the grace of God. I feel honoured and great that I’m one of the top profile rappers in town.

Movie Star, Mike Ezuruonye Gets 3 Plots Of Land In Abuja For Being Nice To A Total Stranger

It sure pays to be nice! Always do good...Nollywood actor, Mike Ezeruonye has just been given three plots of land in Abuja for being nice to a stranger, aw!
He announced this via a facebook post.
He said "There was this day I was traveling to Abuja to shoot a movie and I got into the aircraft and met this woman, she was older than my mother. As I made to put my bag in the overhead compartment, I greeted her but she didn't answer me. I just ignored her and sat down. On arrival in Abuja, the woman was struggling to get her luggage from the compartment and I just stretched my hand and helped her to get it. She asked for it without a thank you but I refused to
give it to her, offering to help her take it down. On getting out of the aircraft, she again requested for her luggage but I said, madam I'll take it to the arrival hall for you and she looked at me with bewilderment.
When we got to the arrival hall I turned to the woman and handed her luggage to her and as I made to leave, she called me by my name. I was surprised and retorted, so madam you even know my name. But why did you not answer me when I greeted you on board the aircraft. She then said,

Mike, I've come across a lot of your Nollywood mates and they seem to be pigheaded so that is why I always want to distant myself from them." I just smiled and told her I'm not like that.

She asked where I was going and I felt she wanted me to ride with her into town. I told her I was in Abuja to shoot a movie. I then turned to leave but some four or five policemen who must have come to pick her told me to wait. I said what's my own, I've helped her to this place and I want to go. They however insisted that I should wait. I didn't really know who the woman was but the long and short of it all was that she ended up giving me three plots of land in Abuja." Lucky him
